No matter what your age, everyone is sure to find something they love!
The 7 Stanes
Spread right across southern Scotland, the 7 Stanes are a trail of exhilarating downhill mountain biking centres, each with a stone sculpture reflecting a local myth or legend. The Dumfries and Galloway trail is in Ae Forest, a short drive from The BQA Hotel and a definite must for any downhill fans. The Stane (or stone) for this trail is the Head Stane and is made from a glacial granite boulder. Weighing 1.5 tonnes and looking south over Ae Village and the Solway, this stone has a carved mouth, eyes and ears.
The Crawick Multiverse
A short drive from Thornhill Dumfries, near Sanquhar, the Crawick Multiverse is a major art project and land restoration designed and built by the globally renowned Charles Jencks. Created as a representation of exciting discoveries and universal theories, the artwork looks to link the themes of astronomy, space and cosmology. Built on a disused open cast coal mine, the outdoors space has created an inspiring landmark that can be marvelled at by every generation.
The Southern Upland Way
Running right across southern Scotland, literally from coast to coast, the Southern Upland Way passes just north of Thornhill Dumfries, with the BQA Hotel being a great stop off point! It runs for 212 miles, starting in Portpatrick on the south west coast and running all the way to Cockburnspath on the east coast. Still undiscovered by many enthusiasts, parts of the Way can prove a real challenge for even the most experienced walker, however shorter stints are perfect for families or the less experienced. The area of the Southern Uplands has been heavily rounded by the effects of glacial melt, leaving a series of rolling hills and stunning scenery.
Only a 10 minute drive from the Hotel, Drumlanrig Castle is set on a 90,000 acre estate boasting miles of beautiful walks and gardens. The Castle is open seasonally and tours can be taken of it’s 120 rooms, taking in the artwork including a Rembrant. There are mountain bike trails and hire available for all ages, with miles of countryside to explore! Ranger led wildlife walks and an extensive adventure playground are sure to keep the kids busy. Season tickets are available from the Hotel.
The Striding Arches
Built by local artist Andy Goldsworthy, the Striding Arches are a series of self supporting arches straddling the hilltops around Cairnhead – a natural amphitheater. Starting from Moniave, a short drive from Thornhill Dumfries, you call follow the arches and discover them for yourself.
All of these activities are local to Thornhill. We are more than happy to advise on day trips from the Hotel, or make activity bookings before your trip. Contact us to let us know of your itinerary or check out our offers page and book your stay today!
